How to use Compress JPG

Add JPGs or a mix of supported photo files. This page starts at 80% JPG quality and keeps the original dimensions.
Convert and compare the input and output sizes shown beside each result.
If the file is still too large, lower quality or choose a smaller maximum dimension, then convert again.

How to make a JPG smaller

JPEG quality controls how much visual detail the encoder keeps. A lower setting will often reduce file size, but can introduce artifacts. This page starts at 80% as a practical point to compare. The result row shows the original and converted sizes so you can judge the tradeoff for your own photo.

Meeting an upload limit

If a form needs a file below 1 MB or 100 KB, compare the downloaded result with that limit. Try a smaller maximum dimension if reducing quality is not enough. Choose Under 1, 2, 3 or 4 MB to set a maximum output size. The converter reduces quality first, then dimensions if needed, and checks the finished bytes. Custom limits such as 100 KB are not available. Keep No limit selected to use your quality and dimension settings unchanged.

Keep an original and a sharing copy

JPEG compression is lossy. Repeatedly compressing a previously compressed result can degrade it further, so use your original file when trying different settings. At 100% quality and original dimensions, this converter copies an existing JPG unchanged. Compression results can sometimes be larger than an already optimized original.

Common questions

Can I make a JPG under 1 MB?

Yes. Select Under 1 MB in Maximum file size, then convert. Each result is checked to be below 1,000,000 bytes before saving. Under 2, 3 and 4 MB are also available. Quality or dimensions may be reduced. Custom limits such as 100 KB are not supported.

Does lowering quality change image dimensions?

Not by itself. With No limit selected, dimensions are controlled separately. A file-size limit may reduce dimensions if quality changes alone are not enough.

Can I compress several photos together?

Yes. The selected quality and size apply to the whole queue, up to 1,000 photos. Individual results can vary in file size.
